The International Cycling Union – UCI – appointed Haderslev years ago to host the 2022 World Mountain Bike Championships in the marathon distance. On 15-17 September, the long-awaited event of the 2022 UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships will finally take place.
After a fantastic summer of cycling seen through Danish eyes, another big race is now ready to roll on Danish soil.
Haderslev Municipality, together with Sport Event Denmark, Trekantområdet and the Danish Cycling Union, will host the World Mountain Bike Marathon on 15-17 September.
“We are looking forward to seeing what international names we will see in Haderslev during the World Cup. The national teams are in the process of selecting riders, so in a little while the registrations will start rolling in from both large and small nations,” says Bent Skov, project manager for the MTB Marathon World Championships.
One of mountain biking’s biggest stars, Swiss Nino Schurter, who has just become world champion in the Olympic discipline, has lined up early for the marathon distance.
“It would be great if he would run the marathon again and try to secure another rainbow jersey when the World Championships are run here in Denmark”, says Bent Skov.
The World Championships in Haderslev will take place over three days from 15 to 17 September. Thursday and Friday there will be unofficial training on the route and Saturday 17 September at 8 am it will start on the event site at Gravene in Haderslev.
“We have put together a really good event, where there is something for the audience. We have the event site in the heart of Haderslev, so there will be life all day, but there is also ample opportunity to reach the route by shuttle bus,” says Bent Skov and continues:
“At the same time, for the first time in the history of the UCI, we have a race for amateurs, who will ride the same route as the elite and leave the route at 12 o’clock, when the World Championships riders have left on the last lap.”
